Fredericksburg, TX · Gillespie County · The Texas Hill Country
If your dog or cat has been scratching and you're getting bitten yourself, you want the fleas gone and you want them to stay gone. Treating the pet alone doesn't do that, because most of the fleas are in the house and the yard, so we treat both and target the whole flea life cycle. Fleas are covered on every residential plan, and if they come back between visits, we come back out at no additional charge.
Fleas usually start with the dog or the cat, but by the time you notice them, they are rarely only on the pet. Fleas feed on the blood of animals, including pets and people, and the bites are itchy, swollen red bumps that can leave the skin irritated. Treating the pet alone doesn't solve the problem, because the flea eggs, larvae and cocoons are already in the carpet, the bedding and the shaded ground outside, and new fleas keep hatching after the adults are gone.
Hill Country Pest Control has been family owned and operated in Fredericksburg since 1979, and thanks to more than 40 years of experience treating fleas in Gillespie County homes, we know what it takes to get rid of them properly. Your veterinarian treats the pet, and we treat the house and the yard, so there is no untreated area left for the fleas to develop in. Fleas are covered on every residential pest control plan, and on a scheduled plan, if they come back between visits, we come back out and treat them at no additional charge.

We provide flea control for homes, yards and commercial properties across Fredericksburg and Gillespie County. Because fleas develop both inside the house and out in the yard, our service treats the two together. If you're on one of our residential pest control plans, fleas are already included.

Inside the house, we treat the areas where fleas develop rather than only the places where you've been seeing them. Flea eggs fall wherever your pets rest. The treatment covers the carpets and rugs, the floors, and the area around the pet's bedding and furniture. If you aren't sure whether the fleas are inside, outside or both, we'd be glad to come out and take a look.

Fleas develop outdoors in the shaded ground where your pets lie down, such as under a porch or beneath the shrubs. If only the house is treated, that is where the next fleas come from. On larger properties and ranches, deer and other wildlife bring fleas in as well. That is why the yard treatment matters as much as the house. Our flea treatment for yards covers those areas around homes in town as well as on ranches and acreage across Gillespie County. If the problem extends across the whole property, our Executive Service treats the house and the entire lawn.

Fleas develop inside the house and out in the yard. Treating one without the other leaves them somewhere to come back from. We treat both, so the whole property is covered.
Fleas are included on all of our residential pest control plans, and every scheduled plan comes with our guarantee. If the fleas return between your regular services, we come back out and treat them at no additional charge.
We have over 40 years of experience treating fleas for Fredericksburg homes. That experience is how we know where fleas develop on a Hill Country property and how to treat it so they don't come back.
The adults you see are only part of the problem. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service's Field Guide to Common Texas Insects describes adult fleas as “small (1/8 inch), dark brown, wingless insects” with “hind legs modified for jumping,” and it explains that “Eggs fall to the ground in the near vicinity where hosts spend time and rest.” In a house, that is the carpet and the pet's bedding, and outdoors it is the shaded ground where your dog or cat lies down. The larvae develop there and spin cocoons, and according to the guide, “Under optimum temperature and humidity conditions development can be completed in 30 to 75 days.”
That is what causes a re-infestation a few weeks after a treatment that only reached the adults. The guide notes that “The pupal stage lasts from 7 days to a year before adults emerge,” so new fleas keep coming out of their cocoons for weeks after the house has been treated. We treat the areas where the eggs and larvae are, inside and out, and we'll tell you if a follow-up treatment is needed.

The treatment works best when the house is ready for it. Before we arrive, please vacuum the carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture and wash bedding, especially anything your pets sleep on. Please also clear as much as you can off the floors. We also recommend vacuuming more often than usual for a few weeks after the treatment, especially the carpets and wherever your pets rest, because it removes eggs and larvae before they can mature.
Fleas on pets are treated by your veterinarian with shampoos and flea treatments made for animals. We recommend having that done at about the same time as the house and the yard. That way the pet, the house and the yard are all treated together.

Flea control in Fredericksburg follows a simple four-step process, from your first call to the treatment.

Tell us what you've been seeing, whether you have pets, and roughly how large the yard is, and we'll get you on the schedule.

The technician inspects the house and the yard to confirm that fleas are the problem and to find where they are developing. You'll have our recommendation and a quote before any work begins.

Before we arrive, please vacuum, wash the bedding and have your pets treated by your veterinarian. If you have any questions about what to do beforehand, please ask when you call.

We treat the house and the yard, covering the areas where the eggs and larvae develop. You may still see a few fleas for a few weeks afterward as the last of them emerge from their cocoons. If you're still seeing fleas after that, please give us a call.
“Without a doubt the best service in town. We have lived here for 28 years and only used them. They do an outstanding job.”
“Hill Country went above and beyond to make sure our experience was exceptional! They are thorough, caring and most important of all our pest issue has been eradicated!”

If you've treated the pet and you're still finding fleas, the house and the yard usually need to be treated as well. The fleas you see are the adults. The eggs and larvae they leave in the carpet and the yard keep producing new fleas until those areas are treated. If you need a flea exterminator in Fredericksburg, give us a call and we'd be glad to come out and take a look.
Because fleas keep emerging from their cocoons for weeks after a treatment. The Texas A&M field guide puts the pupal stage at anywhere from seven days to a year, and the adults coming out of those cocoons afterwards are the ones you're seeing. We recommend vacuuming more often than usual during that time, since it removes eggs and larvae before they can mature. If you're still seeing fleas after a few weeks, please call us. We'll tell you if a second treatment is needed.
Before we arrive, please vacuum the carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture and wash all the bedding, including the pet's. Please also pick up as much as you can off the floors. We also recommend having your pets treated for fleas by your veterinarian at about the same time.
Yes. Fleas develop in the shaded ground outdoors where your pets spend time. If only the house is treated, they come back in from the yard. We treat the yard along with the house. On larger properties, our Executive Service treats the house and the entire lawn.
No, we don't treat animals. Fleas on a dog or cat are treated by your veterinarian. We recommend having that done at about the same time we treat the house and the yard. That way the pet and the property are treated together.
Fleas feed on the blood of animals in general, not only dogs and cats, so deer and other wildlife passing through the property, along with stray animals, can leave flea eggs in the shaded spots where your pet lies down. On acreage, that is often where the fleas are coming from. Rats and mice bring fleas with them as well, and if you have those on the property, our rodent control service takes care of them.
Getting rid of fleas takes a treatment applied where the eggs and larvae develop, along with vacuuming and washing bedding. Vacuuming removes the eggs and larvae from the carpet before they mature. Anything that only reaches the adult fleas leaves the eggs and cocoons behind, and the fleas are back a few weeks later.
Every structural pest control business in Texas is licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Our license number is TPCL 5395. The products we use are applied according to their labels, which is what that license requires. If there are pets, children, livestock or anyone with a sensitivity in the household, please let us know before the visit. The technician will explain what is being used and what to do during and after the treatment.
Yes. We treat homes and yards on ranches and acreage across Gillespie County. When you call, please tell us what livestock and other animals are on the property and where they're kept. That way we can plan the treatment around them.
Both. We can come out once and treat the house and the yard, or fleas can be handled on a scheduled residential plan. The plan is the one that carries the guarantee, so if fleas come back between visits, we come back out at no additional charge.
Yes. Fleas are included on every residential pest control plan, along with ants, scorpions, spiders and roaches. On a scheduled plan, if the fleas come back between visits, we come back out and treat them at no additional charge. Rodent control is a separate service. The other pests we treat are listed on our other pests page.
It depends on several factors, such as the size of the house and the yard, whether you have pets, and how far the infestation has gone, so we need to gather some information from you before we can give you a quote. Give us a call and describe what's been happening, and we'll make our recommendation and explain what it will cost before we do anything else.
